Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are looking for LGBTQ+ teens, and their parents, caregivers, and trusted adults to participate in a new research study about healthy relationships and dating in the LGBTQ+ community.
What’s involved?
Teens will choose an adult they trust to participate in a 4-month research study. Participation will involve
All participants will complete a baseline survey. This survey will ask about relationship experience, LGBTQ+ identity, and communication about healthy and unhealthy relationships at home.
All participants will have the opportunity to attend one in-person event with other teens and caregivers. This event will be held on a Saturday between July and December 2026 (Dates to be decided). Participants will meet with other families to play games, have conversations, and learn about healthy relationships. Lunch will be provided.
Participants will meet for 2 weekly zoom meeting with the same teens and caregivers to check in and chat more about healthy relationships, supporting their peers, and seeking help for unhealthy relationships.
All participants will complete 2 more surveys, the first one 1-month after your first survey, the second 3-months after your first survey.
Finally, participants will have the opportunity to complete a virtual interview with the research team about their experience.
Will I be paid for participating?
Yes! All teens and caregivers can receive up to $190 dollars each for participating. Participants are paid for completing surveys and interviews.
Who can participate?
Teens can participate if they are
14-18 years old
Identify as LGBTQ+
This can include anyone who is gender diverse (such as nonbinary, transgender, or gender queer), OR sexually diverse (such as gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, queer, etc.)
Comfortable completing the study in English (including reading, writing, and discussing)
Living within 50 miles of Pittsburgh
Adults can participate if they are
18 years or older
The caregiver or trusted adult of an LGBTQ+ teen
This is often a parent or caregiver living in the same home with a teen, but not always! LGBTQ+ teens find their support in older siblings, other family members, or community members like coaches or teachers. If a teen has identified, you as an adult in their life they trust to support them and you feel comfortable participating in conversations about teen dating, you’re eligible!

When will the study start?
The study will run 4 groups of parents and teens through the FLARE program between now and the end of 2026. The researchers will reach out and discuss what dates may work best for you. Some families will be asked to complete all of their surveys first and then complete the program at the end of the year. Meetings and events will be held on weekends.
